About the Artist

Based in Kent in the south east of England, Donna lives on West Bay, a favourite place for Turner to paint during the years he lived in Margate. It’s a wide open space facing west and has the most beautiful sunsets. Minnis Bay, Margate, Broadstairs and Jos Bay are some of the most popular subjects for seascapes here.

Donna prefers working in oil, but is also very familiar with water colour and gouache; she likes to produce subtle colours, loves harmony and dramatic contrast. Although the beaches are one of her favourite subjects she also likes the woodland scenes in and around Canterbury, especially when the bluebells are out, or in autumn when the trees are at their best. These pictures are typical of the English countryside.

By way of a change she sometimes takes inspiration from 17th century Spanish masters, and paints still life in Caravaggio’s earth colours, or fish or eggs and tableware against a black background (which Velazquez was fond of doing), or suspends fruit and vegetables from strings (Louis Meléndez painted this sort of thing - they didn’t have fridges, so tying them up kept them fresh longer).

Colour and movement are Donna’s targets, and also she hopes to bring pleasure and a sense of peace to the owners of her work.
